How to read the CMS data summary
The summary organizes available CMS measures related to the care selected. It is not a recommendation or a declaration that a hospital is safe or unsafe.
Green — Encouraging findings
At least two relevant comparative measures are available, with no condition-specific measure worse than the national benchmark.
Yellow — Review carefully
Condition-specific data are limited or one relevant measure is worse than the national benchmark.
Red — Discuss reported concerns
Two or more independent condition-relevant measures are worse than the national benchmark.
Gray — Insufficient data
No condition-specific CMS measure with a national benchmark comparison is available.
Missing or suppressed data never produce a green summary. The CMS overall star rating and general safety-group counts are shown as context, but neither changes the condition-specific color by itself. Every report explains why its color was assigned.
